What is a Chemical Peel?

The chemical peel process, also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling, is designed to improve the appearance of the face, neck, chest, hands and even arms and legs. A carefully selected mix of chemical peel solutions are applied to various areas of skin, which produce a separation and peeling of the skin’s outer layers. This stimulates the production of new skin from beneath. Most chemical peels are performed as outpatient procedures. Depending on your skin type and the desired results, we may recommend a superficial, medium, or deep chemical peel.

Are There Other Chemical Peel Options?

Yes! Chemical peels are individualized according to your unique skin condition. We have an Ultra Peel for exfoliation, Rosacea Peel for a ruddy complexion, and much more.

Types of Chemical Peels

Broadly speaking, there are three types of chemical peels, and most existing peels fall into one of these categories:

Light chemical peels are particularly suited for mild concerns, including slight fine lines, dryness, uneven tone and texture, and acne. Light peels have very little downtime and recovery, and usually, a series of treatments is recommended to optimize the outcome.

Medium chemical peels are designed to go deeper and achieve more aggressive results. They can minimize the appearance of surface-level wrinkles, some types of blemishes, and pigmentation issues. Medium peels have less downtime than deep peels and more than light peels. Your healing process may vary somewhat, and we will describe the typical recovery during your initial consultation.

Phenol acid, the chemical used in deep peels, is designed to provide the strongest effects. Deeper wrinkles and creases, blotchy pigmentation, and actinic keratoses can be improved with this treatment. Deep peels also usually last longer, but they also require a longer recovery period. Not everyone is an ideal candidate for a deep peel, and we will review your concerns and evaluate your characteristics to determine if this is the right approach for you.

Chemical Peel Recovery

The length of recovery will vary depending on the types of peel applied and your unique response to the healing process. Generally, patients who have light and medium peels will see redness (like a sunburn) and experience some tingling or stinging for several hours. Makeup can be used to cover the color and over-the-counter pain medication can address any discomfort. Most patients can return to normal activity immediately after treatment. With medium peels, you can return to normal activity immediately as well, but the new, rejuvenated skin will show up after three to seven days, with full healing after two weeks. Healing from a deep peel can take a couple of months, and patients will need to take up to a week or more off from work to heal.

Chemical Peel Side Effects

Light and medium peels will often have very few side effects, which should subside soon after treatment. Some examples include redness, stinging, and crusting or flaking (the crusting is the old damaged skin “peeling” away, revealing younger-looking skin). Deep peels will have more noticeable effects, although they are typically the same kind, just stronger and longer-lasting. If you have any questions about what to expect, we will go over the recovery process thoroughly at your appointment.

Can I do a chemical peel at home?

Some types of chemical peel solutions are available over the counter and can be performed at home; however, for the safest and most effective treatment, we recommend relying on a skincare professional to perform the procedure. Over-the-counter and at-home peels are extremely mild in order to be deemed safe enough for public use. Even at this level, accidents and side effects can occur, especially if you are not a good candidate for the process. We carefully customize your peel formula to suit your unique needs and goals, something one-size-fits-all at-home peels cannot offer. Protect and preserve the health of your skin by choosing a professional service for this treatment.

How Much Do Chemical Peels Cost?

The price of a chemical peel will depend on the type performed, the complexity of your treatment plan, and the number of sessions recommended to achieve your cosmetic goals. At our clinics, light and medium peels cost around $185 per treatment. We can provide more details about the total cost of your program at your initial consultation.
