Reduce the Appearance of Stretch Marks Old and New
Stretch marks can occur for a wide variety of reasons, but most people agree that these lines are unwelcome.
In many cases, stretch marks will fade with time and become mostly unnoticeable; however, numerous women and men say they are bothered by the appearance of these marks.
As a result, patients may seek out treatments to help minimize the severity of stretch marks, which can appear pinkish or red when new and whitish once faded. Unfortunately, most modalities, including chemical peels, topical retinoid therapy, and pulsed dye laser therapy, have been shown to be ineffective at treating stretch marks.
Our experienced physicians and qualified team of laser specialists offer a more effective and innovative option to help lighten the pigmentation: radiofrequency energy.
Stretch marks can develop as a result of the skin stretching too quickly for the tissue to form normally, typically due to rapid growth in a specific area.
This condition affects millions of people, and reports suggest up to 70 percent of women and 40 percent of men may be affected.
Some of the most common body regions subject to stretch marks include the breasts, abdomen, shoulders (in body builders), thighs, buttocks, and other regions. Maturing adolescents and pregnant women often are most at risk of developing stretch marks, though the use of anabolic and corticosteroids can increase the likelihood of acquiring this condition.
Fortunately, recent studies suggest that stretch marks may respond well to treatment with radiofrequency energy. A recent article in the Journal of Clinical and Anesthetic Dermatology published the results of one such study, which included 16 patients between the ages of 30 and 72 who currently exhibited stretch marks. They each received six treatments of radiofrequency energy at two to four week intervals. Some of the findings include:
- No reported side effects or safety events
- 14 patients reported visible improvement, also acknowledged by physicians through before and after photo comparison
- Treatment was declared comfortable
- Long-term benefits currently unknown
